Dr. George Tesilimi Banji

Dr. George Tesilimi Banji is an Assistant Librarian and a lecturer of University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana. Prior to this, he was the Head of Geography and Regional Planning library and later became the Coordinator of the 33 Satellite libraries connected to the Sam Jonah Library, University of Cape Coast. By profession, he is an Executive Librarian, and Human Resource practitioner. He also consults in peace, conflict and developmental issues. Education

He had his secondary school education at Kadjebi - Asato Senior High, Kadjebi-Akan. He obtained his Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’ from Jasikan College of Education, obtained Diploma in Human Resource Management from Institute for Commercial Management - England, Bachelor of Education in Social Studies from University of Cape Coast, Master of Arts in Information Studies from University of Ghana, Master of Philosophy in Peace and Development Studies from the School for Development Studies, University of Cape Coast and pursued a Doctor of Literature and Philosophy degree in Information Science from University of South Africa – Pretoria. He also obtained a Professional Development Certificate for the Next Generation African Library and Information Professionals from University of Pretoria (UP), South Africa through a Carnegie Corporation Grant.

Work Experience

He taught as a professional teacher for a couple of years before proceeding to the University of Cape Coast to further his education. He later worked in the University of Cape Coast between 2009 and 2016. During the period, he has worked in the Cataloguing department, Client Services department, Periodicals section, Special Collection section, Development Information section as well Information Technology & Research Support Department. He later headed Department of Geography and Regional Planning Library for about 3 years and was also appointed a Senior tutor, Assistant Examiner and Team leader for Research Methods, HIV/ AIDS Education and Social Studies in the College of Distance Education, UCC. He also lectured Information Literacy and served as the Coordinator for the 33 Satellite libraries in the Colleges and Departments of the University of Cape Coast for 3 years before exiting the University. He later joined the University of Health and Allied Sciences in December, 2016. He lectures Information Literacy which is a university-wide course and Nursing Research Methods at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. He also teaches Measurement and Evaluation, Research Methods on part-time basis and also supervises undergraduate students of the College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast. He is currently the Acting Head of Department for Cataloguing and Classification and also in charge of UHAS Institutional Repository. Additionally, he serves as the Chairperson for Education, Research and Training Committee for the Ghana Library Association. He is also the Secretary / a recorder for the Committee of University Librarians and their Deputies (CULD) in Ghana, now known as the Association of Higher Education Librarians and their Deputies (AHELD). He also serves as an astute reviewer for both local and international refereed journals such as Mousaion: South African Information Studies Journal and Ghana Library Journal. He is a Member of the Appointment and Promotions Committee for the University of Health and Allied Sciences’ Library. In terms of mentorship, he mentors PhD, Masters and Undergraduate Students from University of South Africa (UNISA), Pretoria - South Africa; University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast - Ghana; University of Ghana, Accra - Ghana. Research Contributions Dr. Banji’s areas of research include: library and information service provision, staff conflict management and prevention; ICT and usage in academia; human capacity building and management; leadership and employees’ commitment; information for peace, conflict and development. He has also attended workshops and conferences on Licensing and negotiating for research publications; ethical use of information in academic work; running academic institution libraries; copyright and licensing of research publications; building institutional repositories; curriculum development; management of e-learning resources in an academic institution. He is a member of the Ghana Library Association (GLA), University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), and Information Professionals Association (IPA). He has peer-reviewed publications in both international and local journals. With all these competencies, Banji aims to be an internationally acclaimed expert in information management and research towards peace, conflict and developmental issues. He is opened to both local and international collaborations.
